Overview of the Department

The Department is the only department in Korea dedicated to the professional education of traditional landscape architecture. It focuses on nurturing experts in preservation, restoration and management of natural heritage. Based on an extensive understanding of national heritage, the Department provides basic knowledge about quantitative analytical techniques as well as applied education to ensure effective response to climate changes and environmental challenges facing natural heritage. It is also designed to preserve and conduct research on historic spaces embodying the Korean history, life and culture, and develop them into sustainable spaces for future generations.

Objective

Develop specialists in preservation & management of Korean ‘traditional landscaping’ and ‘natural heritage’

The goal of the Department is to foster experts in the preservation, restoration and management of natural heritage, as well as architectural planning, design and construction for integration of traditional & modern landscaping.

Courses

Intensive course on integration of traditional & modern landscaping and preservation, utilization and management of natural heritage

As basic education for integration of traditional & modern landscaping, students will learn such subjects as Introduction to Natural Heritage, Digital Traditional Landscape Architecture Design, Traditional Landscape Architecture Planning. For advanced education, students can choose from ‘Traditional Landscape Architect Course“ or ”Natural Heritage Expert Course,“ during which they can gain on-the-job experience by participating in major research programs.

Traditional Landscape Architect Course

Basic Forming Practice, Facility Design for Landscape Cultural Heritage, Korean Landscape Architecture Heritage, Planting Design, Korean Garden Design, Landscape Heritage Maintenance Planning, Landscape Repair and Restoration Design Ⅰ․Ⅱ etc.

Natural Heritage Specialist Course

Natural Heritage Environmental Analysis, Introduction to Traditional Plant Materials, Application of Traditional Plant Materials, Traditional Plant Management, Arbor Protection Practice, Pedology and Practice, Introduction to Natural Monuments, Natural Heritage Capstone Design etc.

Career

Cultural Heritage Repair Engineer(traditional landscape architecture, plant protection), cultural heritage repair companies(design&construction), research positions related to national heritage(researcher, curator), state-run companies, modern landscaping and construction companies, landscaping-related civil service positions at central or local governments(landscaping, forestry, agricultural extension) etc.
