Educational Goals

Architecture has become one of the most common undergraduate programs offered at universities across Korea.

As a result of having lived through the wave of industrialization while neglecting the historical context, it is clear that there is an absolute shortage of designers, engineers, and managers who can deeply understand and effectively express traditional architecture.

The Department of Traditional Architecture focuses on training restoration designers who can thoroughly understand and address challenges while reflecting the historical evolution of timber architecture styles.

The program equips students with a comprehensive knowledge of traditional architecture’s forms and spatial qualities, enabling them to incorporate the unique characteristics of Korean architecture into modern designs. Additionally, the department prepares experts who understand the flow of forces within wooden structures, the properties of materials, and the characteristics of structural forms, allowing them to effectively engage in restoration and construction with both theoretical and practical expertise.

Curriculum

Providing practical training and specialized education grounded in theoretical knowledge

The department provides in-depth education based on traditional, modern, and applied architecture. It enhances students' engineering analysis skills of traditional architectural structures through a mechanical understanding. Additionally, the program develops their intuition and analytical abilities regarding the effects of material and environmental changes through experiments and practical training.

Offering a 4+2 year curriculum for Architectural Accreditation

The department operates a 4+2 year (undergraduate + graduate) curriculum in preparation for architecture education accreditation, aimed at securing the qualifications necessary for obtaining architectural licensure. The 4-year undergraduate program focuses on traditional architecture, while the 2-year graduate program emphasizes modern and interdisciplinary design. (Targeting architecture education accreditation in 2026.)

Delivering an integrated undergraduate and master's program to develop research professionals in the field of traditional architecture.

This program is designed for advanced education in traditional architecture, reducing the time required to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree from six years to five. It is offered to select some of the outstanding undergraduate students based on their academic achievements.
